Research Collaboration for Regulated Carbon Credit Markets

Initiating joint research activities with Ruaha Catholic University (RUCU) in Tanzania on sustainable and transparent carbon credit markets

Background

International markets for carbon credits link the demand for verified emission reductions and CO₂ removals with corresponding climate change mitigation action. This creates economic links between companies and other market actors, for example in Europe, and climate action initiatives in, amongst other places, sub-Saharan Africa, which interact with local land-use and development processes.

Consequently, questions regarding the quality and transparency of carbon credits, appropriate governance structures, and the environmental and socio-economic impacts of the underlying activities are becoming increasingly important. The interplay between climate change mitigation action measures, local development and land-use processes and international market mechanisms requires an interdisciplinary approach and close scientific collaboration between European and African research institutions.

Objectives

  • Initiating a long-term research partnership between Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences and Ruaha Catholic University, and defining potential areas for joint research

  • Joint identification and definition of relevant research questions concerning the supply and value chains of carbon credits between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa

  • Development of join research approaches to investigate transparency, governance and the environmental and socio-economic impacts of carbon credit markets
